Contemporary performance

Picture
Naomi is a keen advocate for contemporary music and performance.

Since first being exposed to the genre during her time at the University of Manchester, contemporary music has been a significant part of Naomi's musical life. She welcomes the innovative and novel ways in which composers address themes and issues present in life today, and enjoys working with new techniques and sound worlds.

Naomi aims to commission, perform and record a wide range of new works for the violin, working with a variety of composers and creating works herself.

Performances

State of Mind
'State of Mind' is a composition for violin and fixed electronics. The different musical sections and the way they move from one to the other, whether that be smoothly or intrusively, represent our different states of mind; how often and unexpectedly they can change, how they can interrupt each other and how you can try but fail to repress thoughts. The violin part is semi-improvised; the main melodic cells are all based on the interval of a second, whether that be major or minor. The electronics are created entirely from recordings of the violin- some have been heavily manipulated and others left in a raw state.

'the glitterings: transitory states'
Silent video score with improvised solo violin

Created by Elizabeth Ditmanson

Programme note by Elizabeth Ditmanson: 'the glitterings: transitory states' is in many ways a questioning of relationships, an exploration of structures. As a silent video score, the piece invites, requires, the performer to draw on visual themes and relationships to establish their soundworld in a live setting. The sonic character and form of the resulting piece are created through the performer’s navigation of the presentation and evolution, transitions and interrelations of the morphing stream of shifting image ideas. Displayed as a visual component of the work for the audience, this process of interpretation is made public: visible and audible.
